A redo of my favorite anime openings 101-96; I tried uploading it to a new server where you can play the video directly without leaving the page, but I’m not sure how well it will show up on the page. Hopefully it should suffice more than before.
If you want to know the names of the themes featured and their order, click below the cut. I don’t want to spoil anyone unintentionally because the way I made these videos initially was to give an element of surprise. If you want to be spoiled, though, that’s fine. This is just a measure to take for those who do want to watch the video before being spoiled. I’ll also have a reprint of my comments and expanded notes (that I didn’t include in the video) beneath for proper measure.
I actually did change the order of some of the themes in this go around, but not for the bottom 10 (101-90). You’ll see the changes and improvements in the videos to come. For now, I’m leaving the former entries intact, but I’ll start deleting them as I upload the revised versions of each video.
You guys might know I uploaded these to my Youtube account before. Pending claims and other issues on that site, I might end up moving my videos to Dailymotion from now on, because I put disclaimers in just about every video I uploaded, and they were still reported. I can also upload the videos that I made in full, unedited, versus breaking them apart like I had to do on YT.
Hope you enjoy, and as always, feel free to comment.
A few corrections to the beginning notes to clarify: I’ve watched anime for way more than 9 years, it’s actually more or less spanning back from when I was a little girl and didn’t know what anime was. I usually cite Sailor Moon as my first anime series, but I’ve actually watched series that were anime, but didn’t know it at the time (example: the Wizard of Oz and Peter Pan no Bouken dubbed versions).
101. Obata Yoko-”Fushigi Iro Happiness” (Magical Emi)
The description of Magical Emi in the video is slightly outdated since I’ve now watched more than 3 episodes of the series to date. (I’ve watched up to episode 12 or 13 now if I recall).
“To date, it appeals to me for it’s lighthearted and catchy melody” : very much true. When i first saw the sequence for Magical Emi’s theme, there was almost an immediate appeal. It’s very cute – particularly showing the main characters and their respective roles in a fun atmosphere. It’s also one of the more entertaining titles when it comes to the “Magical Girl” genre. If you watch the series, you’ll know that Emi lives with her crazy family and little brother, but finds a charm that allows her to transform into Emi, a girl gifted with magic and helping out her relatives in their magic show…of course, they don’t know her identity, and she scrambles, in amusing ways, to keep it under wraps. Hilarity ensues, particularly since Emi has a wise cracking little friend to guide her every step of the way.
The opening is also featured in several scenes of the series, particularly when Emi shows off a singing talent in one of the episodes.
100. “Boku wa Tameni” by Flying Kids (You’re Under Arrest 2nd OP)
It was really hard to find an opening sequence for this, because #1 most of the DVDs for this series are out of print (which vexes me because I first saw the series on VHS) and #2, this is one of the titles I don’t own personally. I’m still trying to find vendors who sell the original series if possible, because I liked You’re Under Arrest as an overall franchise. Very funny police show with two girls who seem to goof off on the job every so often and often end up in a series of mishaps, but in the end, they almost always get their man (or woman).
This is probably my favorite sequence and song of the series because it was the one song that caught on to me almost instantaneously. The first OP was decent, but this one was the theme in the series I never skipped over once while watching the series. I think it works well with the meaning, showing a cross of all the characters in their day to day lives and how dedicated they are to each other.
99. Chie Harada-”Ghost Sweeper” (Ghost Sweeper Mikami)
I definitely think the TV series for Ghost Sweeper Mikami never made it to the U.S. and that’s something I can confirm in retrospect of making this countdown. I loved how catchy and fun this sequence felt, I really did. Someone commented to me it sounds like a video game theme, which I totally agree with. Yet, I think it was more of the brassy instrumentation that first caught with me alongside the sequence. It sounds very jazzy, and having a love for jazz (both the encompassing genre and songs that “sound” like the genre”), it was no surprise I liked this.
Considering the meaning, it’s actually a rather sexy song in places, and describes Mikami to a tee. That’s what makes its couplement with the sequence so amusing. The series is actually much better than the movie, which is far too short for anyone to really come into it.
To date, I’ve only seen 11 episodes. Don’t ask me where to find it, because unfortunately, I have no idea. It’s been licensed in Mexico, but I don’t know for how many episodes, and it was never licensed in the U.S., so I’d think the best way to bring it to the U.S. is to write any anime companies you can for bringing it here. It’s campy at times, but if you like demon busting series, you wouldn’t be disappointed.
#98 “Bayuka~True Light” (DNAngel)
Yes, I cut this sequence down for length, it doesn’t have the beginning sequence featured, though I would argue that’s one of the best parts of this sequence. Too bad I couldn’t include it.
Blame YouTube, 10 minutes is far too short to showcase all these themes. I wanted to redo these, but I figured might as well keep these videos intact because they did everything I wanted to do with respect to this countdown.
The piano opening leads into the dynamic instrumentation so well in this that I couldn’t leave this song off the countdown in the least. I stand by my statement that both Dark and Daisuke are irresistably cute in the sequence, and it still ranks as one of my favorite series in the long run. Granted, it’s not the most mind-bending, innovative series you’ll ever see, but the romance, some of the plot twists, and the dynamic between the characters are so sweet, it’s hard to resist. Shoujo fans often cite this series as one of the main titles they love; I’ve read and seen it so many times. I concurr, it’s one of the titles that if you’re new to anime and you want a sweet romance with magical elements, you should give a try. Although, it’s also cited as having one of the most annoying female leads as well (Rika…don’t ask why, just see for yourself).
#97 “Tenchi Muyo” by Sonia (Tenchi Universe)
The Tenchi Universe series is actually my favorite series of the Tenchi franchise aside from the OVA series. I love this opening, both the English and the Japanese renditions of the song. So why is is so low on the countdown?
Well, in time, I found a lot of themes that overrode it, but I can’t deny that the sequence itself works very well with the song and showcases each of the characters very well individually as well as collectively. I think to date I still love the very end of the sequence where poor Tenchi’s being fought over by Ayeka and Ryoko, just hilarious and sums up pretty much their attitudes over the collective series.
If I had to make another comment about the Tenchi franchise: I think 2 of the 3 movies actually rank as favorites for me over the time I’ve watched anime. The first (for the nice storyline and backdrop regarding Tenchi’s family), and the final, which finally gives us some closure as to whom Tenchi’s affections really turn toward. That might give you some idea of what themes I’ll feature in the movie segment of my countdown.
#96 “Mou Nakanaide” by Azuza Senou (Ranma 1/2 6th OP)
I mentioned that this was my favorite theme of the Ranma franchise…and that’s actually true. You’ll note in the first installment of this whole countdown, I included “Little Date” (Ranma’s 2nd OP) as one of my top 50 themes, but in retrospect, I still think of this one as my favorite. In the revision, I’m taking out Little Date and putting it as an honorary theme.
It was hard for me to narrow down my favorite Ranma theme because there were so many good ones. “Little Date” was one; “Love Seeker (Can’t Stop It)” was another that appealed to me (7th OP), but in the end, I had to narrow down. I tried to narrow things down so I wouldn’t include too many themes from one series in the overall countdown, and that’s something I went into this noting.
What I like about “Mou Nakanaide”- it doesn’t have the best sequence of the overall franchise (that I would give to “Love Seeker”), but the song is very sweet and catchy, as mentioned in the video as well. It doesn’t come across as too silly (which “Zettai”, as fun as it was, came across to me, and I didn’t like the sequence all that much). I haven’t watched Ranma 1/2 in years, but this was the first theme that came to my mind when thinking of good Ranma 1/2 songs, and that says a lot when I can remember a sequence and a song over several years time from memory.
Well that’s the extended commentary in a nutshell
